Autumn And Our Mortality

The First Day of Autumn

Yesterday, September 23, 2011, marked the first day of autumn. All around, I see signs of botanical life winding down, preparing for a long winter rest.

The trees have begun their adornment of fall colors; the garden is slowly disappearing; temperatures are gradually dropping; and the cloudy days seem more pronounced.

Autumn’s Symbolism

Fall also provides an annual reminder of our own mortality, the brevity of life. As the life of a flower is short-lived, so our lives are but a vapor. Death is not something we usually like to think about, but the fact that death is inevitable should give us more than pause. Are we ready for that day… the day that will come.

A Time of Reflection

This month I had three family members pass away, all within a 10-day span. I was reminded that I must live my life in a manner so that, at any time, I will be ready to meet Jesus, unashamed of how I have lived, this side of eternity.

Our Creator And Savior, And His Love

Our Creator is such an AWESOME God, but only in the last year or two have I been able to truly say that I am literally in awe of God’s love… mind-boggled by His demonstration of love. That demonstration of love is seen in the life of Christ.

It’s so easy to grow up in a christian family and “know” certain truths, but until these truths REALLY GET A HOLD OF YOU (me), we can live our lives unaffected by the magnitude of such truths and reality.

I’ve known since a young child that God loves us, and showed His love by sending His only begotten Son to pay the penalty for our (my) sins. I knew that God’s love “should” mean a lot to me, but now it DOES.

I can’t even wrap my mind around how God almighty, instead of just doing away with us – ungrateful, covetous, murderous, greedy, selfish, mean, ill-motived, manipulative people, (which, humanly speaking, would have been SO MUCH EASIER) – INSTEAD, He sent His Son here to save us. He sent the One who had done Him no harm, to pay the penalty for everyone’s sins. It’s one thing to reach out to someone who is kind, benevolent, considerate, helpful, giving, and grateful, but another thing ENTIRELY to reach out so unselfishly and lavishly to those who hate you. Christ came willingly to do this for us.

I Thought This Was A Gardening Blog

I know this is a gardening/landscaping/nature blog, but, like many bloggers, we sometimes like to share our heart. For me to admire the nature and creation by which I’m surrounded, yet fail to acknowledge and honor the Creator, is to be blind and ungrateful.

My Prayer

I would like to leave you with a few verses that I pray will be the exact words you need to hear at this time in your life. Even though I do not know most of you, I sometimes pray for everyone who has ever landed on this site. My prayer is that you will know Christ in a very personal way. That head-knowledge will be gained that leads to a saving-knowledge / acceptance of Christ, and Christ ALONE. A head-knowledge alone is not enough. The Bible is clear that even demons believe in God’s existence. But only when we trust in the saving work of Christ, plus nothing else (i.e. good deeds, although they are fruit/evidence of and after salvation), can we be called a child of God. [Why would Christ have gone through such a death (and resurrection) if we were capable of saving ourself...]

Some Verses

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Romans 1:20-21

As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;”
Romans 3:10

You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe – and tremble!
James 2:19
[That's a verse about head knowledge only.]

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
John 3:16

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
John 14:6

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
