That’s not the momma bird staring back at you. That’s one of the three plump baby birds, occupying the overcrowded nest. If you look to the right of this bird, you’ll see a second baby smooshed in there. The third baby is in the back of the nest.
Boy, have they grown like weeds!! Based on the photo digital dates, the birds were only ~17 days old in this photo. It was only 12 days earlier when we had gathered up all the fallen hatchlings. They were each no bigger than the mass of a golf ball.
It looks like the bird front-and-center might(?) be a robin. If it is, then it’s the adopted baby. As you can see from the next photo, the momma is clearly not a robin. One of Your Gardening Friend’s Facebook followers, thinks the momma might be in the Flycatcher family. I’ve since witnessed the momma eat an entire dragonfly. That sure sounds like something a “fly-catcher” would do .
